So comparing 3^17 + 3^18 to (4)3^17, apparently an easy way to solve this is as so:
Factor and you get: 3^17(1+3)=3^17(4). So the two items are equal.

This blog will last from October 2009 until I find out how my applications are received (approximately March of 2010). In October and November I will mostly enlighten you with vocab words, math reviews, analogies of interest, and other academic fodder as I study for the GRE.
